What Lies Beneath
Five celebrities strip down to
their barest essentials -- courage, humor, and an inspiring dose of
self-confidence. By Jessica B. Matlin
Carla Gugino "I have a 1950s body," says Gugino, referencing her hourglass shape, as she runs her fingers through the Marilyn Monroe-esque waves hairstylist Louis Angelo created. Her sexy figure might have escaped fans of Night at the Museum and Spy Kids, but audiences will see a spicier Gugino this spring, when she appears on Entourage. After she and actress Marley Shelton took their individual nude portraits, she emailed her boyfriend to let him know that the two of them were about to pose for one together. "He just wrote back, 'I'm hyperventilating!'" Makeup colors: Colour Rush Trio Eye Shadow in Spices, Soft Cream Blush in Soft Kiss, and Cool Shine Lipstick in Cool by Rimmel London. Hair, Louis Angelo of the Garren New York salon; makeup, Scott Andrew; manicure, Sheril Bailey. These pages: Prop stylist, Tom Bell; sittings editor, Paul Cavaco.
Vanessa Williams Williams clearly relishes her campy turn as Wilhelmina Slater on Ugly Betty, a magazine editor as vain as she is manipulative. Apart from the nasty streak, Williams can also appreciate her character's commitment to keeping up appearances. "I work very hard to look the way I do," she says. "It's what I make my living off of." She regularly pops fish oil and other supplements, eats healthfully, does yoga, and works out with a trainer. "It's all part of aging gracefully. And more important, I want to be healthy for my kids." Once she saw the Polaroids, she took a Wilhelmina-like pleasure in photographer Michael Thompson's perfectionism. "Wilhelmina has a passion for getting the best photograph possible, too," she says. "I understand that." Makeup colors: Long-Lasting Eye Pencil in #11 Woody Brown, Blush Variation in Amber, and Rouge Pur Lipstick in Copper Rose by Yves Saint Laurent. Hair, Serge Normant of the Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon; makeup, Brigitte Reiss-Andersen; manicure, Sheril Bailey.
It doesn't matter how impeccable their taste: The simple act of getting dressed can be a career-
