Fertile Fashion Women don't signal when they're fertile, as animals do -- or do they? Psychologist Martie G. Haselton of UCLA and her team found out the schedule of 30 women's menstrual cycles, then photographed each woman during a phase of high fertility (15 to 17 days before the next estimated period) and low fertility, without alerting the women to the timing. Next, 42 men and women tried to assess in which of each pair of photographs each woman was trying to look more attractive. (The faces were not shown.) The judges selected the high-fertility picture with
a frequency significantly greater than chance, and they were more likely to choose it the closer each woman was to ovulation. In the fertile photo, the
women typically had on more fashionable or "nicer" clothes, or revealed more skin.
