ONE OF THE PARADIGM science-fiction "disaster stories is John Wyndham's The Day of the Triffids, published in 1951. Wyndham wrote many other science-fiction stories but The Day of the Triffids stands out as truly inspired. It is simple, elegant, unforgettable and, to one with any imagination, terrifying (anyone who does not know the plot--perhaps there are still a few!--and who does not want it revealed should stop reading now). It fully deserves its status as a classic.
