TAIPEI, Aug 1 Asia Pulse - Around 4.5 million people in Taiwan do not read books, with television and the Internet replacing them, according to a survey conducted by the magazine Global View.
The survey conducted by the prestigious monthly shows that up to 25 per cent of Taiwanese adults, or around 4.5 million, do not read books.
Adults spend an average 2.72 hours per week reading, averaging 23 minutes per day. However, they watch nearly 17 hours of TV per week and spend 7.41 hours on the Internet weekly.
The survey found that among people attending college or graduate school, the Internet has replaced TV as their main pastime.
College and graduate students spend 19.47 hours surfing the Internet, 16.91 hours watching TV and only 3.38 hours reading books.
If magazines, cartoons or textbooks are excluded, the public read only 1.72 books per month. Even those in habit of reading read and average of only 2.77 books per month.
Those who have higher incomes and educational backgrounds tend to read more frequently.
