Adolescent smokers have a 50% higher risk of an alcohol-use disorder (AUD) than their non-smoking peers, even if the non-smokers have the same drinking patterns. According to a review of data from the 2002-2004 U.S. National Surveys on Drug Use and Health, smoking may be a gateway to alcohol abuse or dependence, priming the adolescent brain to become more susceptible to alcoholism and other addictions.
