THE CYCLE OF HISTORY, it seems, is extremely hard to escape. Recent controversy over temporary skilled worker migration to Australia shows remarkable similarities to similar controversy over a hundred years ago.
In the present instance, however, it is possible that the current rhetoric is tinged with a racism that was not present in earlier times. Whereas pre-Federation debate about the immigration of non-white workers was focused almost entirely on the economic effects such immigration would have, there is, in the current debate, a sensationalist--clearly political--tint to the rhetoric that has racist undertones.
