THE DEBATE OVER RELIGION takes many forms. When religious belief dominated both popular feeling and the state apparatus it was the wont of those thinkers who were sceptical about religion, or positive unbelievers, to discuss such matters either privately or in a subdued fashion amongst themselves and their peers. That until relatively recently was also the situation in the highly religiose United States, with occasional noisy exceptions like Colonel Robert Ingersoll in the nine-teenth century.
