CAMILO MEJIA WAS BORN IN 1975, the son of prominent Sandinista revolutionaries. He grew up in Nicaragua and Costa Rica before moving to the United States with his family in 1994. In 1995 he was working full-time at minimum wage to pay for his college education when he was approached by a U.S. Army recruitment team. He joined the military at age 19. "I joined because I thought that doing so would bring me in touch with people all over the United States and maybe even the world," said Mejia. "I was also seduced by the promise of a free college education, which later turned out to be not so free."
