Jul. 25--MANASSA -- Residents of Conejos County voiced their concerns Tuesday about how oil and gas development would affect water quality and wildlife in the eastern part of the county.

About 14,500 acres there have been designated for a U.S. Bureau of Land Management oil and gas lease auction on Aug. 9. Although industry would have to go through other regulatory processes before drilling, leasing is the first step.

Local environmental groups and county residents spent Tuesday night considering protests of nine parcels that are either on or alongside the San Luis Hills.
