Thomson Scientific has raised doubts about the usefulness of the new citation tracker features that Elsevier has announced for its Scopus online STM service.
Citation Tracker is intended to plug a major hole in Scopus. The A&I database has been widely perceived as lagging far behind ISI Web of Science's citation abilities since it was launched in late 2004.
Elsevier said the new tracker functionality would "offer at-a-glance intelligence about the influence of a set of articles, an author or group of authors over time, so users can quickly spot trends".
Scopus Citation Tracker will let users review citation levels for an author's works over time, creating interactive overview tables that can be broken down by years.
"Users told us they wanted to move away from predefined metrics, and analyse what's going on at the level of the individual author or article," said Amanda Spiteri, product marketing director at Elsevier.
