The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America (NSCDA) preserves a wide array of properties in the United States for their associations with historic figures, their architectural significance, and many other reasons. The NSCDA's collecting activities also preserve a way of life that is quickly passing. Today, informal eating is the norm and gracious dining with fine china, precious metals, and crisp linen is confined to infrequent special occasions when two sizes of forks may present a puzzle. Take-out cartons and frozen-food containers often serve as our dishes.
