Small transformer fire cuts power to steel plant.

Jul. 19--HAMMOND, Ind. -- Firefighters used dry chemical extinguishers to put out a small fire in an electrical transformer at the Niagara LaSalle Corp. steel plant Wednesday.

Fire Department Inspector Kevin Margraff said the one of the plant's seven transformers "went bad" about 9:30 a.m. and caused the fire, which was confined to the transformer. The plant at 1412 150th St. was evacuated as fire crews and Northern Indiana Public Service Co. personnel responded.

The fire cut power to and damaged the portion of the plant's power grid the transformer served, including the main office. There were no injuries and no structural …
