The federal Finance Minister, Paul Martin, is promising to "lay the foundations" in his upcoming budget for a campaign to reduce child poverty. From recent studies on the subject, it would seem that Minister Martin has lots of room to work. According to his own statistics, approximately one in five Canadian children lives in poverty. A study by the Bread for World Institute out of Washington ranks Canada in relation to other industrialized, or first-world, countries. With a 14 per cent rate of child poverty, Canada ranks worse than all other industrialized countries except the United States and Australia.
