Early birds: Mall walkers stay inside for exercise.

Jul. 13--Erie Bailey and Herb Craft walk by lingerie models, thousand dollar watches and the pretzel stand. As their bright, white sneakers keep a steady pace, adult contemporary tunes play on the speaker system.

It's 8 a.m. at River Ridge mall and every store is closed.

Craft and Bailey pass the Gap, Belk and JC Penny's without stopping to look at the latest fashions. The two aren't at the mall looking to shop.

Bailey and Craft, both 70, are mall walkers.

"We like to walk before the crowd gets in," Bailey said.

Almost everyday, from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., Bailey, Craft and a dedicated group of people use the enclosed area like it's a track. They walk, round and round, and always in the same direction to exercise and …
