National Archives deal lifts threat of digital dark age
Digital documents at the National Archives (TNA) created on older versions of Microsoft systems will be made accessible following a deal between the software giant and the government's record keeper.
TNA chief information officer David Thomas said it was important for researchers to be able to view documents in the way they were created.
Microsoft will work with TNA to create virtualisation software to allow TNA and its users to view content in the Microsoft application it was created in. In return, TNA will advise Microsoft on digital preservation for future application developments.
"Digital content doesn't map to a paper paradigm; its functionality can be lost," TNA chief executive Natalie Ceeney said.
She described the deal as making digital data as "resilient" as paper.
