In 2002, the R. & B. singer and songwriter R. Kelly was indicted on twenty-one counts of child pornography, after police in Chicago obtained a copy of a videotape showing a man, allegedly Kelly, having sex with a fourteen-year-old girl. Two years later, seven of the charges were dropped, but the case has yet to come to trial. Kelly, who has pleaded not guilty, has responded to his legal troubles by invoking God and, in a recent magazine interview, comparing himself to various black icons: "I'm the Ali of today.
