ACCORDING TO A RECENT article, scientists have discovered that the long-term memory span of a goldfish is eight seconds. There was no mention of the creature's short-term memory, nor of any possible utility which this profound research may promise. But--eight seconds? It seemed to be an improbably tiny segment of eternity, even for a humble fish.

But, observing the gorgeous tank of gold-fish in my dentist's waiting room (presumably to distract the patient's mind from what lies ahead), I noted, watch in hand, that each fish took between nine and fifteen seconds to make a circuit of the tank.
