FOR ANYONE WITH HALF an eye to see, Paris is not only the "City of Light", but just as surely a city of death, with much of this death inflicted by the French on their own. At the time of the Revolution so much blood soaked into the ground from the guillotine during the Terror, in what is today the Place de la Concorde, that grave fears were held for what this could mean for the city's health. Paris, too, is the city which saw the ruthless ending of the Commune with the summary execution of some 20,000 communards.
