Jun. 29--MANSFIELD -- Pastor Michael Evans says he's like the little kid who takes on a bully.
Evans, 40, has made a name for himself advocating on behalf of west Mansfield, which is mostly home to black families. Since becoming senior pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in 1991, he has asked city officials to improve roads, services and parks and to bring economic development to the area.
"If I think you're trying to bully someone into submission, my reaction is to fight back," he said.
As he begins his tenure on the Mansfield school board, the married father of two boys said his goal is to improve Mansfield schools any way he can.
"Education helps all of us move up the ladder to attain the American dream," he said. "Each student can be successful."
From law to ministry
Evans grew up in Houston, the oldest of six children. He said his family always emphasized the importance of education. His dad worked his way up from a campus monitor to a high school principal.
