Ron Miles. Stone/Blossom. Sterling Circle SCR1220, 2006.
In his quiet and unassuming way, Denver-area trumpeter, cornetist, and composer Ron Miles has always been something of a jazz maverick. In fact, his work often seems to maintain only the slenderest connection with the jazz mainstream, although it never feels like any kind of "fusion" or even like experimentation. It simply sounds like music, usually gorgeous music, and his latest effort as a leader is no exception to that rule. Stone/Blossom is a two-disc set; the first disc finds Miles working in a fairly traditional quartet mode, playing trumpet and leading a rhythm section that includes pianist Eric Gunnison, bassist Kent McLagan, and drummer Rudy Royston. His compositions are far from typical, however: "Devil in Mind" finds him in an almost rock mode, while "Clairvoyant" and "Letter Grade" are almost meditative, his trumpet staying almost completely in the middle registers and laying out his ideas with a ...
