SIR: What's the difference between a fair-minded, no-holds-barred critique and a hatchet job? One of them seeks to understand its subject on its own terms, and then to expose it to unrelenting rational scrutiny; the other looks for any means, fair or foul, to injure a subject for which the author has only malice.
