SIR: Sheik Hilaly is not, as some believe, a figure of fun prone to crazy outbursts. His barbs are pointed, and part of a concerted campaign of destabilisation. His claim that Muslims have more right to Australia than others (the planes-versus-chains argument) did not receive as much attention as some of his more spectacular remarks, but the fact that he uttered it means it is likely to have some wider currency in the Australian Muslim circles in which he moves.
The trouble with the Native Title legislation was not that it gave land rights to Aborigines, a legitimate claim, but it gave a small group of non-indigenous Australian opinion-formers the chance to claim our occupation of the continent was both immoral and illegal. And then for good measure they threw in a supposed recent genocide of the Aboriginal population during the "stolen generations" era.
Our legitimacy is a precious piece of cultural capital ...
