SIR: Don Parham (January-February 2007) presents three people's versions of the Eureka Stockade in order to go beyond the simplistic interpretations.
But one of his witnesses, Raffaello Carboni, who wrote the only book-length account by a participant, already went beyond black-and-white versions. He admitted that there were thugs mixed up with the protesting miners but exalts the courage and desire for justice of the others.
As I recounted in my biography of Carboni, Stages of the Revolution, he had a Deep Throat in the administration of Governor Hotham, who is another of Parham's witnesses. This enabled him to acknowledge Hotham's initial good intentions but also portray his limitations and eventual pettiness.
