LOVE FOR THE NEARLY DEAD 
 
   If only we had asked her 
   where she fought in the history wars, 
   before it was too late. 
 
   If only I had listened 
   that winter night she tried to speak 
   about her mother's life. 
 
   I wonder where she hid 
   her secret book with the recipe 
   for the family Christmas cake.
