The changing face of business information
For business information users, academics and other professional researchers, access to accurate databases of legal and financial documents is an essential business tool. Law firms, financial institutions and media companies will pay handsomely for these services, of which there are three key suppliers: LexisNexis, Thomson and Factiva.
LexisNexis, a subsidiary of Reed Elsevier, is a combination of a legal database, Lexis.com, and a news service, Nexis.com. Lexis contains full-text US statute and legal documents, as well as an extensive case law archive, alongside legal archives for the UK, France, several Commonwealth countries, and others.
Its main legal information competitor is Westlaw, a subsidiary of Thomson Corporation, which also owns Dialog, a news and content aggregator, bringing together a wide range of reference information and news feeds. The internet has given access to information sources to huge numbers of professionals within organisations on an immediate basis, the former "online" giants have been under attack. They have widened their reach by developing log-in interfaces over the internet, and giving companies licences for certain numbers of users.
The internet's influence has also forced them to invest heavily in interface design, capacity load, and search and server technologies.
