The Renoir cover sets the scene for the seven impressionistic treasures inside. Composer Jennifer Linn's intentions are clear, both for the sounds she wants and for the ways to achieve them. The in-depth interpretative guide for each piece is directed not to the student but to the teacher. I purposely played through the book before reading the performance notes to let the music lead me to my own conclusions. The titles give great hints on interpretation: hornets, hummingbirds, great white sharks, for instance. Her technical and compositional precepts were clear to me. The music says what she wants; her descriptions leave no doubt.
An example: the whole-tone piece "Asteroids" made much more musical sense to me when I took into account her dangerously close and drifting harmlessly away. And I surely hadn't considered the leftover "ashes" of vibrating strings. Rather than have the students read the performance notes; I'd ...
