Jun. 21--KINGSPORT -- A General Sessions Court bailiff confiscated a sword-type knife hidden inside a cane Tuesday -- just a day after county money was authorized to install courtroom metal detectors.

Phillip Thomas Serpas, 25, 370 Brookfield Drive, Kingsport, was charged with carrying a weapon during a judicial proceeding after Sgt. James Sluder found the sword.

"He'd had surgery and needed a cane, but he knowingly brought in a cane with a knife in it," Sluder said.

The bailiff said he was opening Sessions Judge Mark Toohey's courtroom for the 1 p.m. session and watched as people filtered in.
