Sir Henry Wellcome (1853-1936), who was born in Wisconsin, moved to England in 1880 to form a partnership with a former schoolmate, Silas Mainville Burroughs. Together they established a hugely successful pharmaceutical company. Pursuing his interests in medicine and medical history, ethnography, and anthropology, Wellcome became an avid collector and philanthropist in these areas, and in 1932 commissioned a building in central London to house the majority of his collections.
