Twin brothers Mateo and McHale Shaw of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, were born last May with spina bifida and conjoined at the spinal cord. In September, their parents, Ryan Shaw and Angie Benzschawel, brought the boys to the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where they were separated during an 18-hour operation.
Meanwhile, Lori Van Slett of Hales Corners, Wisconsin, an artist who specializes in painting murals, had been following the ordeal of the Shaw twins and their parents. When she saw the boys' plain white bedroom on television, the artist decided that she could use her talents to provide the family with something "magical" to arrive home to after their long, trying ordeal.
"I just wanted it to be really special when they come home," Van Slett told the Appleton, Wisconsin, Post-Crescent. "I was just amazed at the strength that [Ryan and Angie] had for their age. I'm watching them and I'm thinking they're such young kids and they have this incredible courage." (The twins' parents are in their mid-20s.)
