Jun. 17--Despite their presence, Saturday's parade downtown was not about royalty, old-fashioned cars or drill teams. It was about history.
A small crowd braved the early morning heat and humidity Saturday to see the annual Juneteenth parade, which ran down Main Street from the library around East Santa Rosa Street and back up Bridge Street to East Commercial Street. The revelers waved as the cars passed, calling out to their friends in passing vehicles and generally celebrating their freedom and the freedom granted to the slaves almost 150 years ago.
