NAFTA has been trouble for many small businesses, something businessman Brian Coons, president of Brico Welding & Fab of Chesterfield, Michigan, knows all too well. According to Crain's Detroit Business, a business journal serving the Detroit area, Coons "lost contracts to Mexican and Canadian competitors that he said don't have nearly the wage and health insurance expenses carried by U.S. manufacturers." Low wages in Mexico meant competitors there could undercut prices while favorable exchange rates meant that competitors in Canada could do the same.
