WKRN.com reported that David Espino, a part owner of a Madison, Tennessee, discount tobacco store, "bought himself a gun. Monday he bought a holster. Tuesday night, he used them both when police said 19-year-old Joshua Whitworth and two others tried to rob him."
Espino purchased a pistol to protect himself at work after two clerks in a store down the road were cold-bloodedly murdered during a robbery the previous month. The killing really put him on his guard because he had met both men, and both seemed very nice. On January 16, masked robbers burst into Espino's store, put a gun to Espino's partner's head, and threatened to kill both his partner and the store customers if Espino didn't bring them money immediately.
When the robbers finished issuing their demands, Espino heard a loud noise that sounded like a shot, and so he opened fire. The robbers fired back. Police later counted 19 shell casing inside and outside the store. Espino hit Whitworth in the hand, and the robbers fled.
