The United States and the European Union have signed on to a new transatlantic partnership intended to harmonize regulatory standards between the two governments as part of globalization. As summarized by the BBC, "The pact is designed to boost trade and investment by harmonising regulatory standards, laying the basis for a US-EU single market."
The pact itself states: "We seek to strengthen transatlantic economic integration." It creates a "Transatlantic Economic Council" that will "push ahead with regulatory convergence in nearly 40 areas, including intellectual property, financial services, business takeovers and the motor industry," the BBC reported.
