Contrary to popular belief, not all stylists live and die by fashion trends. What always inspires me is seeing a designer take an idea and do it with such incredible confidence and imagination that in the end it has the power to resonate in some deeply personal way with me. After loving how Phi and Louis Vuitton mixed delicate, gossamer-light lingerie into their spring 2007 collections, I couldn't Netflix Picnic at Hanging Rock-for perhaps the hundredth time-fast enough. (I adore the lacy Edwardian petticoats and laced-up boots in the movie.) I found myself constantly replaying in my mind a Citizens Band concert where they performed their usual fabulously warped cabaret in fragile 1930s slips, or buying far too many Victorian camisoles in the basement of Jill Stuart's SoHo shop.
This isn't about wearing any old piece of frayed crepe de Chine: Lingerie has to be beautifully made and sexy in a subtle way. My other ground rules: Toughen up ...
