On February 16, Terry Ryan and her three-year-old granddaughter arrived home from the Fair Play Elementary School in Fair Play, Missouri. Ryan carried her granddaughter's books and sidewalk chalk upstairs in a plastic bag and set it down.
"It was cold, so I had to build a fire downstairs," Ryan told the Bolivar Herald-Free Press (Missouri). As the grandmother and granddaughter walked down the stairs hand-in-hand, Ryan stepped on a piece of sidewalk chalk that had fallen out of the bag. Slipping, she fell down about 10 steps, and her granddaughter also tumbled part of the distance.
