Members of Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences last month passed a secret ballot vote of no confidence in President Lawrence Summers. The motion "the Faculty lacks confidence in the leadership" of Summers passed 218 to 185, with 18 abstentions. Resolutions such as this are unheard of in Harvard's 369-year history.
Summers has been in the spotlight since January for suggesting that women may not have the same "intrinsic aptitude" in science as men. His comments alone can deter women who are potential scientists and mathematicians, according to a Stanford University psychology professor.
