The Collegiate Network's 10th annual Campus Outrage Awards picked the College of William & Mary's President Gene Nichol as the 2007 winning nominee for most egregious action in 2006. In October 2006, Nichol secretly ordered the removal of a gold cross from the college's historic Wren Chapel. When the removal was brought to light by an independent student newspaper, Nichol defended his action by asserting that "the display of a Christian cross ... in the heart of our most important building sends an unmistakable message that the Chapel belongs more fully to some of us than to others."

The Williamsburg, Virginia, institution, which prides itself as the second oldest college in the United States, was built in the 1690s and named for England's then-reigning monarchs, King William III and Queen Mary II.
