On May 4 the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its latest report on global warming, this time focusing on strategies to mitigate the growth of greenhouse-gas emissions. The latest report is in keeping with the tradition of using warming fears to justify expansions of government power, and it offers a number of policy options for combatting global warming, including "taxes or carbon charges on fossil fuels," higher "taxes on vehicle purchase[s]," "tradable permits" for greenhouse-gas emissions, and greater "land use regulation and enforcement."
Environmentalists welcomed the report and the potential it brings for greater government control over the economy.
