Newman "Ted" Jackson, an 80-year-old WWII veteran living in Orangeburg, South Carolina, woke at 2 a.m. on February 20 to his dog's barking. He grabbed a pistol near his bed just as an armed man burst through his bedroom door. The intruder immediately saw that he was in Jackson's sights and did an abrupt about-face. Jackson related what happened next to the Times and Democrat: "I thought for a second, 'What if he gets clear and then turns around and shoots up my house with that submachine [the gun was actually a Tec-9 semi-automatic pistol].'" Jackson fired at the man, striking him in the back of the neck.
When questioned about the shooting, Jackson didn't regret for a moment what he did. He told the Times and Democrat, "I worked hard for what I got. I hate a thief, I hate a thief." Jackson told the paper that the wounded intruder, Christopher Aiken, would have died in that incident, but Jackson only had one bullet loaded in his gun. He added, "You can't do without a gun in Orangeburg."
