The 15 British Royal Navy personnel seized by Iran on March 23 were released on April 5 and flown home to England, after two weeks of escalating tension and international pressure. Iran claimed the British military personnel were operating illegally in Iranian waters when taken hostage and broadcast statements by several of the captured sailors saying that they intruded into Iran's territorial waters. The British Ministry of Defense and Prime Minister Tony Blair claimed the British unit was operating inside Iraqi territorial waters, and provided GPS coordinates to prove their case.
