Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis joined in a march between the holy cities of Najaf and Kufa on April 9, the fourth anniversary of the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq. The demonstrators, mostly Shiites called into action by radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, demanded that U.S. troops leave their country. Many burned or stomped on American flags and chanted "Death to America."
