The firing of eight U.S. Attorneys is the subject of much debate and rhetoric by pundits on all sides. Far too little attention has been paid to a rules change introduced by Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) in the 2006 reauthorization of the U.S. Patriot Act that eliminated the process of requiring congressional approval of these appointees. One more "frivolous" check and balance gone, from a Republic historically of three separate yet equally powerful branches of government.
