Jewish Veteran Fashions Crosses for Local Order
On a recent morning in Rio Rancho, 74-year-old Jack Elkin is busy handling food donations in the kitchen at the St. Felix Food Pantry.
Other volunteers are moving in and out with handcarts, while an elderly woman affectionately called "Grandma" sorts hundreds of bagels and places them in clear plastic bags.
The free food, donated by area grocers, civic organizations and individuals, will be handed out to the hundreds of needy people who will come here today.
The food pantry is operated by the Felician Sisters, a group of Catholic nuns in Rio Rancho, and an army of dedicated volunteers. It occupies what used to be an Italian restaurant near Intel and helps feed some 6,500 families a month.
Looking down from nearly every wall are simple wooden crosses made and donated by Elkin.
