Milk thistle, particularly its seeds, has been used medicinally for more than 2,000 years. Ancient writings recommend milk thistle for liver and gallbladder disorders, and poisoning from toxic mushrooms and snakebites. The modern use of milk thistle extract began in 1949, when animal studies showed that it could protect the liver against poisoning from carbon tetrachloride (a manmade chemical once widely used in fire extinguishers and refrigeration liquids). Since then, more than 100 clinical trials have been done on this miraculous herb, which is carried in many European hospital pharmacies. Milk thistle has saved lives by reversing acetaminophen and some mushroom poisoning.
Why It's So Powerful
Milk thistle works in several ways. The herb's active ingredient, silymarin, is a strong antioxidant that helps "quench" free radicals, including those created from environmental pollution and chemicals. People living in smoggy areas, where air quality is poor, may benefit from daily supplements. Milk thistle also protects cell membranes (most studied in liver cells) and stimulates the production of new liver cells.

If your gums bleed when you brush your teeth, you may need more vitamin C and folic acid (1000mcg daily) and CoQ10 (100-200mg daily), but milk thistle will also help.
