At 77.9 years, our average life expectancy has hit an all-time high, according to new figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While medical advancements, safer working conditions, earlier detection of illness and other factors have significantly contributed to the steady increase (up from 75.4 in 1990), prevention is still one of the easiest ways to lengthen--and enhance--your life.

Researchers are still unclear, however, as to why men live an average of five years less than women. They suspect that multiple factors, including how each sex handles stress, accounts for the shortfall.
