* Monument rangers rely on unpaid help to hold back the weathering of centuries on the abandoned Kuaua pueblo
Around 1600, shortly after Don Francisco Vasquez de Coronado passed through this area, the Kuaua Indians abandoned their pueblo and vanished.
Four hundred years later, Coronado State Monument near Bernalillo relies on volunteer support to help keep the remnants of the abandoned pueblo in good repair.
On Saturday, the New Mexico Volunteers for the Outdoors will sponsor "Cleanup Day at Coronado," a daylong event during which the monument staff welcomes the public to paint, plaster, restore adobe and clear the trails.
