Southern Site Needs Greater, Some Say
A new West Side school should be built south of I-40 to ease overcrowded buildings at the two schools in the area, a few parents said Thursday.
"I think the priority should be on the south side," said Truman Middle School parent Joseph Hernandez. "I feel that the south side's been getting ripped off for a long time."
Albuquerque Public Schools officials have recommended that while two West Side middle schools are needed, the first should be built in Paradise Hills. The school would open by fall 2000 if voters approve a general obligation bond in 1999.
Members of a site selection committee met with parents at West Mesa High School on Thursday night to gather input. Thursday's meeting -- the last of two -- drew eight members of the public. One committee member said she was surprised there hadn't been more interest.
The committee, which includes parents, principals and neighborhood and district officials, is scheduled to make its recommendation to the board of education in late June.
