22 Catholic, 9 Protestant Believers Martyred in 1886 Massacre
At different times in history, Ugandans -- like those in many countries -- have suffered atrocities at the hands of their tyrannical leaders.
In the late 1970s, Uganda's president, Idi Amin, is believed to have been responsible for the brutal execution of as many as 300,000 of his opponents.
One hundred years earlier, another execution rocked the east-central country in Africa, this time targeting Christians.
Christianity is the predominant religion in Uganda today -- 66 percent -- but it was a hard-fought victory for the Catholic and Protestant churches that sent missionaries there near the end of the 19th century.
About 10 years after they arrived, French and British missionaries were driven out and some of their disciples were executed at the command of Uganda's teen-age leader, Kabaka Mwanga.
