Adam Guettel, whose mother, Mary Rodgers, composed the score for the musical Once upon a Mattress and whose grandfather Richard Rodgers had a hand in a few Broadway hits, too, once swore that he would never go into the family business. Apparently he is not a man of his word. Next month, the 40-year-old New York-raised composer and lyricist makes his Broadway debut with The Light in the Piazza, a gorgeously melodic, unabashedly romantic chamber musical that confirms him as a major theatrical talent.
