So what does it take to launch a must-have fashion label? For Neal Sperling, a mere eleven items of fine Italian cotton jersey. During the spring collections in Paris, the 36-year-old from Philadelphia showed his gauzy designs-scrumptious mushroom-colored "petal" tanks, draped and puckered "tulip" skirts-to a word-of-mouth-driven throng of international press and buyers.
Why the fuss, in Paris no less, for T-shirting? Think early Helmut Lang basics mixed with the layering properties of James Perse tanks; think seasonless functionality, balletic hues and silhouettes, and the softest jersey around.
"Launching this label was a huge turning point for me," says Sperling. "I needed to do this for myself." The designer had previously spent his career assisting "various Seventh Avenue people and then some." He was an intern at Geoffrey Beene, where he assisted Alber Elbaz. ...
